Set in the 1980s, you are an amateur film maker with a knack for horror films.
You'll be leaving your life and best friends in New Orleans behind, as you make your own way forward, travelling to Montana for then only college with an arts program you can afford, defiant of your father's intransigent intentions, no longer willing to be his walking trophy rack.
In a climate of friendship, budding romance, self-acceptance, folklore and mystery, you'll confront your repressed feelings with the support of new friends, and face challenges even greater than navigating life as a college freshman.
Northern Lights is a slowly built, grounded, slice-of-life story, where you embark on a journey of discovery, alongside an array of interesting characters who are just as oblivious about the secrets of their town and neck of the woods as you are, growing together, bonding through shared experiences.
Explore the story with your new friends, rather than through them. It's up to y'all to focus and pay attention to the world around you, pull on threads, and dig deep to find answers. What secrets will you unearth about the past of Aspen Hollow? Will you have the strength to embrace an uncertain future, and thrive? Will you accept your true self at at long last?

This FVN is truly one beautiful piece of art. I was lucky enough to have discovered it this June, and so I was able to read the story up to chapter 5 while waiting like crazy for the next chapter that came out a few days ago. Needless to say that I am again going crazy over finding out how Cody's story is going to roll out in chapter 7. The story, music, visual art are all so carefully pieced together and brought to life, and they made me deeply connect with the characters and their tale. Not to mention the lore being entirely consistent, even from as early as chapter 1. This VN has won a special place in my heart (and apparently my brain too, since I can't get Cody's -beautiful- whispered melody out of it xD). I truly love this VN, and all its creators deserve all the love and support they can get out of this community. Truly, kudos to all of you! This is quite easily my no. 1 VN out there! :3

So, this novel was essentially in hiatus since June of last year. This novel has a bunch of fans that have been waiting quietly for the next chapter release, which happened just before you posted this comment. That's why the interactions have spiked. This is very typical for VNs. Therefore I don't find your conclusion to be as likely as you think.

I really love the scenery in this game as someone who grew up in the northern panhandle of Idaho. I always loved driving into Montana for day trips. I always found the areas around Missoula and Butte to be gorgeous. I hope to travel to the area again someday soon, Florida is so flat by comparison haha.
Honestly one of the best novels I've played along with RTFVN. I might even like this one more. Though there were SOME bugs and typos, it didn't change the impact of the story. I won't say much so I won't be able to spoil others, but damn does this vn make me cry omg
The way I related to the characters in specific ways just says how well the story's been being written. Absolutely love it!
Also, I'm so excited to uncover more of what the mc is experiencing! Words can't begin to explain how shocked I was to see the end credits. I was NOT ready for it to end lol.

I played this VN and I have to say that this is the most amazing VN game I ever played, but there was something on my mind.
How did the main character a.k.a cody meet aldric if he knew him already back then, is there some kind of backstory to it?

Also, very good stuff so far! Very interested in the concept as a whole and I'm a big fan of the sound design and the use of animation bits within the piece.

I gotta know who's the car guy/s is on the team for Northern Lights‽¿¡! They seem to go so far as to make Aldric's trucks exhaust note be correct for the engine it's equipped with, I know what a Ford 300ci inline-six cylinder engine sounds like, and they made his sound properly. Even about what it's like to ride in a regular cab truck with a bench seat and a manual transmission. Also the comment from Dev about the quality of Aldric's welding. The one comment that really shows there's a team member who's a quite mechanically inclined individual is, his theory of what Split Peak is for. A witness mark? No one without knowledge in vehicles would know what a witness mark is and what it's used for 😉 😜 👌.
Never have I cried so much reading a VN as I have with this one. It's truly a heart touching game and my favorite one of all.
Yeah, the part that kicked my feels square in my nut was when he received all the letters Aldric had sent because someone saved them for him. Especially the last one, I just lost my shit, and had to read it a few times so I could take in what was written without having to stop to clean up all the shit leaking on my face from all my sobbing😭😢😢😥😰😓😭
Oh yeah, the letters scene had me bawling for a while. It was so bittersweet and one of the most memorable scenes in the story
And i can't wait for the next update! I'm interested in Vinny's backstory, as I have a feeling there's a story behind him currently being single, and his caring & compassionate demeanor. As well as Devon's story, and what the deal with his padlock necklace. It's clearly a source of calming or assurance for him, as he rubs and plays with it when he gets nervous.
Right? Vinny has definitely been through some things because he's so kind and understanding. I like Devon and would like to know more about his backstory and why he's so scared of the supernatural.
I hope they get into his story, and Vinny's as well as I'm betting Vinny lost a bf or husband and Dev has had an interaction with a ghost he's hasn't told any of them. The latest update is one of my fave of any FVN, and has the best written & illustrated sex scenes I've yet seen of any FVN. They both made me tear up, after all the ones the story had already 😢 made me release 😭 throughout it.

I think it was some spelling/grammar and rewording fixes. I skimmed through the game and there were some points skipping was paused.

It was some minor typo fixes, as well as replacing the festival background in Chapter 5 with the finished version

This is by far my favorite duo (Aldric mostly :3) in any VN I have read so far. Deeply saddens me that this godly VN is on hiatus. Nevertheless, I wish all the best to the author gets through. Wish you all the best!!

He just resonates so much with how I've felt during my childhood and how I will be soon moving out for college and stuff, leaving everything behind me The story isn’t just raw; it bleeds. Honest doesn’t even begin to cover it. Every character drags their scars into the light, unvarnished and aching. But there’s a purity there—like they’re reaching out to each other through pain, offering something real in a world so often starved for truth. I stayed up two entire nights not because I had to, but because I couldn’t stop. And when it finally ended, I felt adrift—like I’d been holding Aldric’s hand through stormy nights, and now… there’s only silence in my apartment. And beyond Aldric, the whole package is breathtaking. That main menu… just, wow. It’s not a menu. The tiniest details—how buttons shift, how the music settles in your chest, even how the cursor hovers like a careful touch—it’s a moment of ceremony every time you boot the game. The art holds you. The backgrounds don’t just represent places; they are places—Montana dusk pressed against your eyes, the chill in the air settling into your bones. And the soundtrack? I could write a thesis on how it holds space for ya. Look, I finished it in two evenings. Two nights of absolute mental breakdown, and then... that hollow echo when it’s over. I’m sad, yes—but more than that, I feel changed. And I’m so damn grateful. Thank you, devs, for sculpting something so delicate and yet so unforgettable, for writing with the kind of love that drips off every character, every ambient hum, every quiet moment.
So to SplitPeak Studios: please, please don’t give up. If I could say anything: please keep going with this beautiful, aching VN. It belongs somewhere in the hearts of everyone who knows what it’s like to find a soul in fiction, and to never forget when you lose it—for just a moment, you had the world in your hands. How can you not help falling for an MC who loves Wolfmen, who's also quite attractive himself, and, like myself, he prefers to grow his hair properly long, and also like me, wear it down most of the time. Mine is around 3x the length of Richter's which is only an inch or two above my waist currently.
Then you have Captain Lyall Reed. Who's by far the most attractive Wolfman with regards to his body/stature, demeanor, and his loving nature. As well as his shyness, awkwardness, etc around someone he finds attractive, aka Richter. Lastly he, like Richter & myself, knows he has great hair/mane and knows the best thing for it/him/ & us, is to grow as much of it as he possibly can. If you got it, there's no shame in wanting to have as much of it as possible. Which is why he has the most well kempt, long, soft, and smelling neck floof, chest floof, shoulder floof, head and back neck floof of any FVN wolf character ever drawn. He also envies and prefers Richter's mane to be proper long and he seemed upset when Richter told him he wanted Lyall to cut it back quite a lot.

The only 'danger' I'm currently having to address is daily spam bots commenting malicious links. A problem that is getting increasingly worse and impacting many Itch project page comment sections.

I've played a lot of visual novels, and I must say the scene writing and ambiance for Northern Lights is unmatched. I don't cry while reading easily, and i was crying before the end of the first chapter. Truly a beautiful VN
when will the next update?
Its not often I find the way I view my life changed massively by something; I've read a fair number of longer emotional stories because they tend to be my favorite, I love stories that stick in my brain for years after in decent clarity because they changed my outlook on something. Most stories like this I've read have never truely ended in me changing myself as a result, and I intend to make this the first of hopefully many.
I'm not sure if its my new meds, or my mental state being stripped bare this last week, or a growing fear of rejection, or the roughly 3 mental breakdowns I've had today, but what I have read of this story so far (just finished reading the section where the MC gets a care package from their friends) and I have not found myself crying so heavily at any media for an unknown amount of time.
And I'm hoping that I'll stop lying about who and what I am to the people I love the most out of fear that they won't like me for it. I can handle a lost friend or two if it means I'm comfortable in my own skin.
Thank you for this game so far, I hope that I can create something that impacts another person as much as this has me.
